Steven A. John, PhD, MPH, presents: Leveraging Implementation Science to Advance Sexual and Gender Health: A Crash Course in Methods

The current timeline for moving innovation discoveries to routine use in clinical care is 17 years—commonly referred to as the “research to practice gap.” The goal of implementation science is to speed up the timeline from discovery to impact by leveraging research methods to reduce barriers to adoption and use of evidence based treatment and prevention. In this seminar, we will: (1) describe determinant, process, and evaluation research frameworks; (2) discuss implementation strategies and leverage Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change; (3) classify implementation outcomes; (4) compare several common implementation research study designs; (5) deploy the Implementation Research Logic Model for planning and synthesizing implementation research; and (6) apply these concepts with illustrations from several NIH-funded projects focused on HIV prevention among sexual minoritized men.
